Backgrounds of Pages

Hi, I'm doing GCSE art and I'm struggling to decide what to do in the background behind my drawings. I've tried watercolours but I don't just want to throw watercolours everywhere and have a rainbow sketchbook that looks childish with background pages that don't suit what's on the page. I've also tried inks which work well but still don't exactly suit the project either and I don't know how to make a background look interesting and professional while still relating to the project. Another problem I'm having is that the background of the reference pictures I'm using are stages from shows so they're difficult to draw at the angles of the picture. I know that less is more and not every picture needs a background but my sketchbook is looking pretty bare.

Any advice?
